Hi everyone, just joined today and figured I would say Hi. I'm 19 about to turn 20 in less than 2 weeks. I'm engaged and living in PA. I'm currently working on my own novel and I read as much as I can.

Allright, so, hey! im a noob here, i just signed up about ten minutes ago. I was just browsing around and somehow ended up here at the LNF, and just had to join. About me, I like to write alot, anything from reviews to essays to music, but mostly poetry, especially in the form of prose. The only thing I cant really write well is fiction, mostly because I totally SUCK at dialogue. As far as music goes, I play guitar, bass, drums, piano, sax (alto and bari), and banjo. yeah, thats right, a banjo (go ahead. laugh. get it out. there ya go! =P ) any-hoo, so yeah, I also paint and do photography, with the latter definitely being my favorite medium. As far as books go, I can get into pretty much anything. I tend to read more non-fiction. Psychology, Social Psychology, Philosophy, History, and Politics make up the bulk of my collection. (yeah, i know the subjects diddnt need to be capitalized, but it looked cool, so i did it. aint i a rebel?). In my personal life, I am an eclectic eccentric and a proud dork. I have done everything in my power to go off the beaten path and build up as many experiences as possible, both great and terrible, but always beautiful. anyways, yeah, I hate writing about myself because I always feel like I'm being self-absorbed or something, so if you want to know more about me, hit up my myspace page myspace.com/crookedcigarette. I'm starting The New Lifetime Reading Plan by Clifton Fadiman and John S. Major, and I thought it might be nice to find people who've read some of these books. For those who haven't heard of this book, it's a chronological list of 133 authors, beginning with the anonymous composer of The Epic of Gilgamesh and ending with Chinua Achebe, author of Things Fall Apart. Then there's an appendix of a hundred 20th century authors, in case you're still ticking and need more to read.

I'm doubtful of the wisdom of tackling them in order, but I thought it might be as good a way as any to get going. (I think I'll need a new tack by #39: "William Shakespeare, Complete Works".)

So, on to The Epic of Gilgamesh. I have both the Penguin edition, translated by Andrew George, as well as the poetic David Ferry edition, which has gotten positive reviews.

Well, to be honest I am a part of this forum for a class I am taking right now in theory. Basically, we are trying to define literature by the end of the class through readings and experience with literature. I chose this venue to observe literature, and the meaning it seems to have with the idea of translating this into a theory that will hopefully define what literature is.

As for me, I have my undergraduate degree in psychology and literature, and I have returned to school to get my teaching certificate in secondary education, english. One of my favorite authors is Raymond Carver, and among his works, one of my favorite stories is "Tell the Women We're Leaving". I have also been obsessed with East of Eden lately. I try to write poetry and short stories when I have time, although I am a little shy to share any of it. I am excited about being a part of this forum even after I have finished my class requirement. Greetings from Turkey/Istanbul. I am very new and glad to see an active literature forum. I am 30, actually an engineer, and bad at English.

Hi I'm from Sydney, Australia. Im a big literature fan, and am big lover of art and thought in general.

As far as fiction goes I love mystical and philosophical fiction and am allways seeking more. For example Hesse, Voltaire, Brautigan are probably my three favourite authors.

I also love critical and philosophical work and am a big fan of Neitszche, Sartre, Deleuze & Guattari, Michael Hardt, Focault, Derrida.

I suppose I love work of a spiritual nature, and am attracted to works that speak both to the deep recesses of the individual me, and the me which is part of a collective human community. I love that fusion I suppose.

I am also really attracted to beutiful forms of prose, although I don't really mean traditional modes of description, but for an example Richard Brautrigan writes what has been the most beautiful writing I have ever encountered, sentence by sentence. It doesn't seem to matter what he is talking about, its the way he says it... anyway I love it.

If anyone can ever recommend any other authors whos work sits well with my passions as described above, then please be sure to suggest them to me. Don't assume that I have already heard of them, because I probably haven't. I haven't actually read that much.

Im 26 years old and I currently work in bars. I have considered going back to university, but i find that I am more productive in my current mode.

Within 10 years I will begin and for the rest of my life continue to make a comfortable living from the proceeds of my writing.

Thats all I suppose. If there is anyone in Sydney who is into literature as much as I am.. let me know. I am starved of literary companionship LOL!!!!
