I have noticed it seems that a lot of her poems reference birds in someway. Does anyone know if there is any special significance of birds in her poetry? Or if birds have some special meaning to her?

Well I know she said "hope is the thing with feathers," so I would guess birds might represent hope for her.
(Woody Allen wrote a hilarious collection of shorts entitled "Without Feathers" referring to this.)
I think thats true. In one of her poems, she talks about how someone in despair hears the birds sing on a summer morning '' stab my ravished spirit with dirks of melody'', and in that poem, I think birds represent hope, represent that life and nature go on, even though the person speaking in the poem is in despair.
