EYE-OPENER
Dark and dreadful was the night. I lay awake
for fear nightmares would come calling again.
The silence spoke volumes to my troubled brain.
Will it never end?
I rose and walked to the window hoping that
the cold night air would do me good. It did not.
Not a breath of wind stirred the curtain. No moon.
The night was pitch-black.
I got dressed and went out into the night air,
wandering aimlessly along the dark streets;
searching, seeking… something. What, I did not know.
No one ever does.
At the park, I sat on a bench in silence,
just thinking. From far away I heard a sound,
faint, but clear: A clock striking the hour of twelve.
Midnight and alone.
It may have been just a dream, but people passed;
an enormous crowd. They were specters, every one.
“The night is ours, leave us be!” they cried loudly.
I ran home very fast!
My room is cheerless; the night is still very black.
Loneliness and fear are constantly with me.
But I look out the window into the dark;
I am not dead yet…
