    Happy Belated Birthday, Gustavo!

Hope you had a fun day, Gustavo!

    An interview with Gustavo L.:

Why are we doing this interview thing?
I think it will be fun.

Are you sure you want to do this?
    Well, yeah.

    Got milk?
    Yes, with honey.

Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar?
The charm lies in the mystery rather than in the clarification.

If you had a personal theme song what would it be?
Perhaps “O Pastor” (“The Shepherd”) by Portuguese band Madredeus.

    Are you male or female?
    Male.

What makes you keep coming back?
Insightful literary criticism from Litnet members and great book suggestions.

Are you happy with the way things are here?
Yeah. I just wanted to have the time to post more often.

    Which countries have you visited?
Only Paraguay. But I’m going to visit France and UK next month.

How do you like your home town?
It’s difficult to say, since I haven’t been there for 10 years or so and I heard it changed a lot. I like the memories I carry from it, though – white beaches, dunes, the smell of the sea.

If you could live somewhere different, where would it be and why?
Probably in France. I plan to move there next year. It's a beautiful country and the best place to get graphic novels published.

    Do you have any pets?
I had fours dog at my former home, but now I haven’t any.

    What makes you happy?
Art. Family. Women. Friends. Books. Unexpected rain after a hot day.

What is mankind's biggest achievement, and its greatest downfall?
Achievement, hmm… poetry, I think. As for the downfall, slavery. Or maybe some 80s music clips.

Do you feel comfortable in your walk with God/atheism?
Well yeah, though sometimes I wish He was a more talkative friend. But who knows, perhaps I should listen more attentively.

Which actor should play you in a movie based on your life?
    I have no idea.

Given the option, what animal would you choose to be?
    A falcon.

What were your favorite things to do the past? What about now?
Drawing, table games with friends and translating poetry from English into Portuguese. Pretty much the same things now.

What makes you feel great about yourself?
Compliments from people whom I respect.

How did you meet your significant other?
I’ll tell you when I find her.

    Who inspires you most?
Dante Gabriel Rossetti, since he was good both at writing and art, as I aspire to be.

What are you naturally good at? (Skills, abilities, gifts etc.)
Well, people say I’m good at writing and at drawing. I can also ride a bicycle without my hands.

What is the one thing you must do before you die?
To create something worthy of being remembered.

If you had to teach something, what would you teach?
    Art history and kung fu.

What would you regret not fully doing, being or having in your life?
I regret not having studied foreign languages earlier.

Do you feel the divine spark of life within you or do you consider yourself a mechanical thing?
I definitely feel the divine spark.

What method do you cherish above all others, as means to improving your life?
I’m easily distracted, so in order to improve my life I’ve been trying to get rid of useless and distracting things (I stopped watching TV, for instance) to concentrate myself on what is essential.

What is your role in an emergency situation: the 911 dialer, the person who runs to the scene to help, the video recorder, or the person too overcome by shock to do anything?
I'd like to say I'm the person who runs to help, but perhaps I'm more of a video recorder.

What one thing would you NEED to have on a deserted island if you didn't have to worry over food and water?
I’d say Monica Belucci, but alas, it has to be a thing, uh? A book, then, with many different stories in it, like the Bible.

What song is in your head at the moment?
    Lilly Town by Alizée.

Which book are you reading at the moment?
A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens.

The last book you finished reading?
King Arthur in the mirror of time by Anne Besson.

    What is your favourite quote?
L’amore è tanto più fervente, quanto la cognizione è più certa. (by Leonardo da Vinci, meaning “the more exact the knowledge, the more fervent the love”)

    Favorite food?/ Comfort food?
    I’m between Yakisoba and Lasagna.

What time of day do you most often find yourself on the LitNet?
    Mostly in the afternoon.

What are you wearing at the moment?
    A t-shirt and bermuda shorts.

    Favorite poem?
Sudden Light by D. G. Rossetti

First novel you remember reading on your own?
    Lost Illusions by Balzac.

What era do you find most of the books you read are from?
    19th century, I think.

    Favorite TV shows?
I seldom watch TV, but I enjoyed the Battlestar Galactica dvds. I like anime, too, Cowboy Bebop and Escaflowne being my favorite.

Which LitNet members would you like to meet in person if you could?
Several, there is a lot of interesting people here. Poetic Passions, skasian, Niamh, stlukes, Logos, Virgil, Scheherazade, Janine, JBI, highley, The Comedian, and others.

Last words you said out loud?
"No, I don’t know your grandma."

    Last person you hugged/kissed?
    A very dear friend.

What do you do (for a living) to be able to keep your LitNet addiction going? And are you happy with your chosen profession?
I’m an artist and a grad student. Yeah, definitely.

What question would you like to ask yourself?
"When will you start to clean the apartment?"

What would you like to be if you could change your profession?
I don’t think I would change that for anything in this world, but sometimes I think that being a military jet pilot would be cool.

What is your most outstanding feature?
    Modesty prevents me from saying.

If you could change one thing about the way you look, what would that be?
I think I’m fine with the way I look.

Which book do you wish you had written?
    The Worm Ouroboros.

What should you be doing at the moment instead of answering these questions?
    Finishing my doctorate thesis.

If you could only rescue one item from your burning house, what would it be, and why?
A rare edition of a book in medieval Portuguese, The Quest of the Holy Grail.

    Wonderful Superman or depressing Batman?
    Batman.

Anything that you want to forget but you never can?
I’d like to forget I read The Lord of The Rings, just to have the pleasure of reading it for the first time again.

Tell us about some amusing translation mistake you have heard or made yourself.
Actually it was a whole book, “English as she is spoke” [sic], a Portuguese-English conversation guide written by a guy who didn’t know a word of English.

[B]Are you mostly happy with life or are you still in pursuit?[/B
    Always in pursuit.

What type of Faerie would you like to be and why?
A knightly type, like those in The Faerie Queene.

    What makes you laugh?
    Too many things to count.

What part of “Final” don’t you understand?
I think I understand it quite well, I’m just not that comfortable with it.

One final word of wisdom for LitNet users?
Choose a work you love and you’ll never have to work in your whole life.

What question would you like to ask to the person to be interview after you?
What would you do if you could get invisible?
    ~

Gustavo? Is this librarius? Are you back? Happy birthday my friend. It's wonderful to see you back! Wonderful interview.

This could be my translation travesty but I think this is happy birthday wish.

Thanks, everyone! These cakes seem delicious.

    Papaya,
    There are exceptions, I admit.

    Virgil,
Sorry, I’m not him, but thank you for the birthday song, it has such beautiful lyrics.
