Then we sat on the edge of the earth, with our feet dangling over the side, and marvelled that we had found each other.
Hey, I just realized the Spanish word for girls is "chicas." Is that where the slang "chicks" derived from?

that's very cool. i often wondered where that slang came from, in fact that is written down as one of the things i wanted to ask the etymologist guy....very good observation.Originally posted by ajoe

LOL actually, that may be so. But my AP English dude told us (when we read The Sun Also Rises *puke*) that it was brought back from France by the WWI soldiers. Because the French slang for hookers was "les poules" -- chickens.

LoL. Well, I think the word "chicks" went through the same phase as the word "hoe" is now. Which some people use to describe all women. Which isn't nice. But I guess that's why "chick" is a traditionally guy thing to say. I think with the whole beat/rock'n'roll scene it started to mean just "girl."

I have only heard women referred to as chicks or hoes in movies.
I refer to women as chicks but usually only when I'm talking to friends and I am woman.
And back in the day my friends and I were gonna form a rock band that was antithetical to New Kids on the Block (that dates me doesn't it?) called New hoes in the 'hood.
